While driving northbound on Rt 295 in the area of Penns Grove, my eye caught the sight of a dark, large bird with an unusually huge wingspan, flying and flapping its wings slowly southbound along the ditch next to the highway at an elevation of only 10 feet. It landed on a wooden fencepost, facing away from the highway, and from its back I could see its dark brown feathers were somewhat disheveled and ragged. Perhaps it was an older bird. The sighting was over in a few seconds, as we were driving by at 65mph. Truly it was the largest wingspan of any bird I've ever seen in NJ.
