Details COMMON (LARGE NUMBERS)
Notes O.K.... I had to choose something for a species - so I chose orange-crowned warbler since maybe this is the closest? (though I don't see the orange crown...). If anyone knows what this is for sure please let me know and I'll change it! Joanne

-we have searched extensively and couldn't come up with a positive ID; has a wing- bar visible and no streaking on the breast, which should say that its not an Orange- crowned; the orange crown is often not visible; appears that the upper bill is black and the lower bill light, which should make it a Northern Parula; the yellow is all over the place, including, at the base of the beak on the crown; the yellow on the lateral breast area has similarities to the yellow- rumped; did you see the rump color? Perhaps we have a 'hanky- panky" Hybrid? Calling all Geo warbler experts! HA!

Ha ha ha - it was driving me nuts too! I was talking to my Mom and she said you should never try to identify warblers at the best of times but especially not this time of year because it could be in any phase.... could be a juvenile something-or-other too....... I was looking at juvenile common yellowthroats (male).... maybe that too? No I didn't see it's rump...... darn! Thanks for trying !!! Joanne

Alright, I'm off my leave of absence. First of all, thank you Joanne, because I love cases like this. If I had to guess (and I'm just throwing this out there) is a 1st year Yellow Warbler. They have that yellow on the tail, some yellow streaks, that color wing, beak, and head, and they have the those whitish edges on the tertials. Again, just throwing that out there. Yellow-rumped and Orange Crowed are good guesses, too, though!!

-when I saw yellow " all over the place", the Yellow had crossed my mind; TawnyOwl's detailed knowledge of a Yellow's 1st year plumage I think was the key; ident was made more difficult for bookies like myself, because images of a 1st year Yellow are scarce or non existent, for good reason; Tawny's bird- banding experience and plumage knowledge, along with Joanne's images have sold me on Yellow! :o))

Thank you very much, Jim! I've worked with quite a few Yellow's over the years. This sucker just looked more like a Yellow than anything else that I could think of.

You're very welcome! I love doing that! I haven't looked at the bird books yet. I want to see what they say! Try looking at the Sibley Field Guide to Eastern Birds! It's a good one! Yes, I love seeing those males, but at least you saw a Yellow in the first place!! Have a good time!
