-only kites that we see up here are on a string! HA!

I think so! It says that this sighting is rare, but they're pretty common around here! There were 9 of them, and they were all doing some amazing acrobatic maneuvers. They look a lot like the Peregrine Falcon, in the sense that Peregrines have those swept back wings. However, their wing beats are completely different. Kites have an almost Mourning Dove wing beat, while Peregrines have that powerful one!
