Oh my gosh! That's an outstanding shot! Usually I see them at night flying around catching insects. I don't see to many in the day. If you go to a baseball or football field, you'll usually find them flying around the big lights at night.
-we will never forget the time that we saw our first Nighthawk, up real close on June 5, 1989; we had seen the zoom maneuvers of the males as they torpedoed toward the ground and we were aware of their regular calls as they cruised high above the ground searching for insects; I saw them once at dusk in a small meadow, in a group of 7- 10, folding over one another in swallow- like flight at ground level, as they fed on insects; but the biggest thrill was walking cautiously up to a specimen that had perched parallel on a large lower branch of the green ash tree in our backyard! We were able to take our time in observing the female who stayed from 8- 12 noon, seemingly resting or sleeping!
Beautiful markings and colors...I often see them sitting on posts, balanced on barbed wire fences along country roads, they'll take a nap it seems almost anywhere!
PS ~ Thanks all for the kind comments on my pics, :) ~ Rad
