Here's a challenge for you Jim (you might already have done this, I'm not sure). Be able to identify Downy, Hairy, Pileated, Northern Flicker, and Red-bellied woodpeckers by their call, and drumming sound. It took me three years to do this, but I finally did it.

TawnyOWL15 -in the list that you gave me, I'm pretty good with the Northern Flicker/ Pileated calls; weak on the Hairy/ Downy calls, probably because I don't see a Hairy very often; am definitely weak on the Red- bellied, as this species appears to have only occasionally reached our neighbors in Saskatchewan; However, I received a neat book of Bird Songs (Beletsky), when I retired and you can "Push and Listen" to 250 North American bird songs; the Hairy isn't one of them! -I'm very weak in drumming identification. ):):

Jim-- It's just a fun thing to get good at. Like I said, I just recently got good at it. You'd be amazed at the drumming sounds! Downy's have some of the more distinct drumming sounds. As far as calls go, the Flicker/ Pileated are very difficult, their drums are also fairly close. If you go to http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/ you can just look around there. It's a great site for calls!
