I was really surprised to observe this behavior in the nuthatch. I thought only woodpeckers and their close relatives hammered away like that.

-because the posts contain no food, we would have to suspect that they too, use tapping to call for other nuthatches.

It seems to have worked: this morning I saw 2 nuthatches at the rainbarrel!
