These are said to be the only woodpecker that forages on both the ground, and in trees, however, I saw a male Pileated forage on the ground! It was the strangest thing!

-Pileated woodpeckers are often seen on the ground, chiseling out the bases of large decaying trees, in search of Carpenter ants.

Well that was something that I didn't know, however, this wasn't at the base of a tree! He was pecking straight into the ground!
