It was funny: the first time I heard the drumming - on Thursday - I was beside our garage, trying to sneak up on a bunch of red-winged blackbirds to take a photo, when suddenly a loud rat-a-tat-tat thundered out, startling me and scaring off the blackbirds. I thought someone was jackhammering somewhere in the neighborhood. We kept hearing this mysterious noise over the next few days. My husband thought something was wrong with the sump pump. I thought something was loose on the roof. Then he figured maybe one of the "whirlybirds" on the roof was off-centre and rattling. The noise was really loud inside the house near the fireplace (chimney??). Finally, I figured that maybe a woodpecker was making the racket drumming and sure enough, when we heard it again on Monday morning, my husband "caught" the flicker.
