-you are correct, they are House Finches; this species is expanding rapidly and they are becoming more common in Edmonton; take note of the male territorial songs, which are beautiful; if you click on the "Birding Resources" tab; click on the blue "field Guide" and type in "House Finch", there is a list on the right hand side of "Related Sightings", where you can see that sightings have become more common in your area.

Thanks Jim! I talked to the Wildbird General Store yesterday and the man there told me the same thing, that there certainly are house finches here, and have been for a few years. All the range maps I can find say otherwise though - hopefully they will update sometime soon! Joanne
