About Sadly, this barrier island community continues to fill in priceless marshlands for development at an alarming rate. Every time I have spent in Avalon visiting family, I have seen more different types of birds with little effort than anywhere else I have birded! Unfortunately, there is only a tiny wildlife refuge in Avalon, and most of the birds I have seen have been on the marshes from a private residence or out in a kayak at high tide. Therefore, if you are not renting a house here, Cape May is really the place to go as there is an Audubon Center there and it is partially protected.
Notable birds Glossy Ibis, Black Skimmers, American Oystercatcher, tons of Snowy and Great Egret.
Travel Southeastern New Jersey.
